Ladies Black Douglas - DAY 2 Sectional

Day 2 Game 3

Rigby & Murphy through but Keegan falls short

The second day of sectional play has seen favourites (Murphy & Rigby) progress to the post sectionals while the big name to miss out was Julie Keegan.  The ageless Di Cunnington appears in the post sectionals for the umpteenth time while Jenny Blundell had the best result of the day at 6 + 44.

Seven of the eight section winners were undefeated while Carole McDonald survived a last game loss to Julie Keegan to claim the section by 5 shots.

NOTE: Post Sectionals 4 sections x 4 players (attached), 3 games, 25 up.  Sectional winners progress to Thursday morning knockout semi finals, final Thursday afternoon.

SECTION WINNERS

S9 Maria Rigby Darra Cementco 6 + 38

S10 Di Cunnington Tweed Heads 6 + 31

S11 Barbara Sprengel Ocean Shores 6 + 18

S12 Sue McKenzie Broadbeach 6 + 15

S13 Carole McDonald Manly 4 + 18

S14 Marilyn Peddell Coolum Beach 6 + 29

S15 Jenny Blundell Everton Park 6 + 44

S16 Karen Murphy Cabramatta 6 + 35

Section 9

Maria Rigby (Darra Cementco) DEF Julie Ezzy (Sunnybank) 21-13

Jenny Blyth (Coolangatta) DEF Jan Morton (Cohuna/Glenroy) 21-13

At 21 ends this was Maria Rigby's longest game of the day yet she still registered an 8 shot win and led from the 2nd end to the finish and looking in ominous form.  Her undefeated run gave her the section at 6 + 38.

Section 10

Di Cunnington (Tweed Heads) DEF Linda Morish (Pine Rivers) 21-8

Mary Geddes (Bribie Island) DEF Angela Bonutto (Vermont Sth) 21-14

In the battle for section 10 Di Cunnington never gave Linda Morish a look in.  Cunnington won 7 of the first 8 ends to lead 17-2 in a staggering opening.  Morish collected 6 shots in the next 4 ends but it was a fine win to Cunnington 21-8 on 15 ends.  Cunnington with a win dating back to 1995 will need to outlast Maria Rigby in the post sectionals to continue her golden run.

Section 11

Ann-Maree Peart (South Tweed) DEF Debbie Logan (Springwood) 21-11

Barbara Sprengel (Ocean Shores) DEF Yvonne Lovelock (Musgrave Hill) 21-13

Barbara Sprengel snuffed out the hopes of the other two ladies in section 11 with a third consecutive win and an automatic section win.  Sprengel kept Yvonne Lovelock at arms length early at 13-2 (11 ends) but Lovelock came back well to trail 11-14 on 18 ends.  Sprengel would not be denied and went on to win 21-13 after 23 ends.

Section 12

Karen Goldsworthy (Springwood) DEF Lorraine Wilmott (Caloundra) 21-17

Sue McKenzie (Broadbeach) DEF Maree Gibbs (Milmerran) 21-20

It was a fantastic match for section 12 between Sue McKenzie and Maree Gibbs with it going down to the last bowl.  It took brilliant last bowls of McKenzie on the final two ends to stop Gibbs.  Gibbs held two shots and match on the 24th end at 19-18 when McKenzie's last bowl reduced it to 1 shot.

Going to the 25th end Gibbs led 20-18 and with McKenzie holding shot with a bowl to go, McKenzie trailed the kitty to collect a further two shots.  This three gave her a tremendous 21-20 win and a place in tomorrow's post sectionals.

Section 13

Julie Keegan (St John's Park) DEF Carole McDonald (Manly) 21-13

Sally Hickman (South Tweed) DEF Valerie Jackson (McKenzie Park) 21-15

Julie Keegan needed an 11 shot win over Carole McDonald to win section 13 and although the win was registered the margin fell short.  Hope was present at the 19th end when Keegan led 16-9 but 2 shots at the next to McDonald sealed her fate.  Keegan to her credit didn't give up and continued to an 8 shot win 21-13 and rueing her 1st round loss by 11 shots.

Section 14

Sandy Wallace (Adelaide) DEF Faye Clarke (Pine Rivers) 21-13

Marilyn Peddell (Coolum Beach) DEF Margaret Fairbairn (Caloundra) 21-12

Marilyn Peddell defeated a gallant Margaret Fairbairn by 9 shots to win section 14.  It was 7-3 to Fairbairn on 7 ends but Peddell took control from there winning 9 from 11 ends.  Still, Fairbairn only trailed 12-15 on 17 ends but a pair of 3s gave Peddell the match and section.

Section 15

Lolita Treasure (South Tweed) DEF Margaret O'Rourke (Moore Park) 21-11

Jenny Blundell (Everton Park) DEF Tracy Foster (West Toowoomba) 21-9

Jenny Blundell was the best performer of the day and a final game 12 shot win gave her a very impressive 6 + 44 total.  Foster could have won the section by defeating Blundell but after taking the lead on the 6th end Blundell was never headed and will go into the post sectionals full of confidence.

Section 16

Julie Dean (Paradise DEF Joan Tennent (Lara) 21-15

Karen Murphy (Cabramatta) DEF Gail Crompton (Bargara) 21-8

It would be a strange post sectional without dual winner Karen Murphy and it was business as usual as she won her third successive match and section 16.  Gail Crompton kept with her with Murphy leading narrowly 8-7 on 11 ends.  An 11-0 run over 6 ends stretched the lead with Murphy winning in 20 ends 21-8.

Day 2 Game 2

Murphy & Rigby looking the goods

Karen Murphy and Maria Rigby are looking in fine touch leading into game 3 while a change of bowls provided a change of fortune for Julie Keegan to keep her hopes alive.  Maria Rigby had the largest win of game 2 (18 shots) followed closely by Marilyn Peddell (17 shots) and Julie Keegan (16 shots).

Section 9

Maria Rigby (Darra Cementco) DEF Jan Morton (Cohuna/Glenroy) 21-3

Julie Ezzy (Sunnybank) DEF Jenny Blyth (Coolangatta) 21-19

Maria Rigby continued her domination of section 9 with a crushing 18 shot win over Jan Morton.  At 4 + 30 and her 3rd game opponent Julie Ezzy at 2 + 0, Rigby could afford a 14 shot loss and still take the section.

Section 10

Linda Morish (Pine Rivers) DEF Mary Geddes (Bribie Island) 21-9

Di Cunnington (Tweed Heads) DEF Angela Bonutto (Vermont Sth) 21-14

The final game between the undefeated Linda Morish 4 + 13 and Di Cunnington 4 + 18 will decide section 10.  Morish trailed 5-7 on 8 ends but won 10 of the next 12 ends to comfortably win in the end 21-9.  Cunnington led from start to finish against Angela Bonutto to record a 21-14 win.

Section 11

Yvonne Lovelock (Musgrave Hill) DEF Ann-Maree Peart (South Tweed) 21-20

Barbara Sprengel (Ocean Shores) DEF Debbie Logan (Springwood) 21-13

Three ladies remain in contention in section 11.  Barbara Sprengel at 4 + 10 controls the destiny and a win will give her the section automatically.  A loss of 10 shots or more to opponent Yvonne Lovelock will give her hope while lurking at 2 + 1 is Debbie Logan.  Logan needs a Sprengel loss and a win with margin over the winless Ann-Maree Peart to be any chance.

Section 12

Maree Gibbs (Milmerran) DEF Lorraine Wilmott (Caloundra) 21-15

Sue McKenzie (Broadbeach) DEF Karen Goldsworthy (Springwood) 21-11

Maree Gibbs 4 + 11 or Sue McKenzie 4 + 14?  Their 3rd game clash will put the winner into Wednesday's post sectionals.  Maree Gibbs had to battle a determined Lorraine Wilmott in game 2.  Each time Gibbs went away Wilmott returned; 9-2 on 10 ends became 9-7 on 11 and 17-10 was reduced to 17-15 on 20 ends before consecutive ends of 1, 2 and 1 gave Gibbs the win.

Section 13

Julie Keegan (St John's Park) DEF Sally Hickman (South Tweed) 21-5

Carole McDonald (Manly) DEF Valerie Jackson (McKenzie Park) 21-7

A change of bowls gave Julie Keegan a strong 16 shot win over an out of sorts Sally Hickman who only won 3 of the 15 ends.  At 2 + 5 Keegan will need a win of 11 shots over Carole McDonald 2 + 26 to be a chance for a section win.

Also seeking a McDonald loss will be Val Jackson at 2 - 3 who will also need a significant win and margin to keep her slim chance alive.  McDonald led 5-4 after 5 ends against Val Jackson but a run of 16-3 over the next ten ends gave McDonald her 14 shot win.

Section 14

Margaret Fairbairn (Caloundra) DEF Sandy Wallace (Adelaide) 21-20

Marilyn Peddell (Coolum Beach) DEF Faye Clarke (Pine Rivers) 21-4

Another section in two; Margaret Fairbairn 4 + 4 V Marilyn Peddell 4 + 20 with the winner advancing to Wednesday's post sectional.  Fairbairn trailed for most of her match against Sandy Wallace and it was at the 16th end where 3 shots put Fairbairn ahead 16-15.  It was a tense finish with a 20 all score broken by a Fairbairn single at the 23rd to provide her the hard fought win.

Peddell had the opposite experience, racing to a 7-1 lead and only allowing her opponent Faye Clarke 3 of the 16 ends contested.  From 9-4 after 9 ends Peddell won 7 ends in a row and collected the 12 shots to get the necessary 21 shots.

Section 15

Tracy Foster (West Toowoomba) DEF Lolita Treasure (South Tweed) 21-10

Jenny Blundell (Everton Park) DEF Margaret O'Rourke (Moore Park) 21-8

A game in two for section 15; the winner of Tracey Foster V Jenny Blundell will take the second last post sectional position.  Blundell is in fine touch and her 2nd game was powerful leading all the way in a 13 shot win. She led 11-1 after 10 ends and the closest O'Rourke came was within 5 shots with Blundell winning 17 of the 21 ends played.

Lolita Treasure kept Tracey Foster honest and Treasure led 8-7 on 8 ends before Foster won 8 of the next 10 end 14-2 and ultimately a comfortable win to Foster.

Section 16

Gail Crompton (Bargara) DEF Joan Tennent (Lara) 21-17

Karen Murphy (Cabramatta) DEF Julie Dean (Paradise Point) 21-9

A final game win to Karen Murphy will give her another post sectional appearance and with 23 shots ahead of her nearest rival a small last game loss may not be disastrous.  Her opponent Gail Crompton at 2 -1 will need to beat Murphy by 11 shots to overtake her.

Julie Dean needs a large win over Joan Tennent and a Murphy loss to remain in contention.  The Crompton/Tennent match was entertaining with the lead changing 10 times over 22 ends before Crompton sealed it with 3 shots on 22 ends to win 21-17.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 2 Game 1

Former winners Murphy, Rigby, Cunnington, Fairbairn win first up; Julie Keegan shock loss

Section 9

Maria Rigby (Darra Cementco) DEF Jenny Blyth (Coolangatta) 21-9

Jan Morton (Cohuna/Glenroy) DEF Julie Ezzy (Sunnybank) 21-19

2003 champion Maria Rigby started her Black Douglas campaign in style with a solid 12 shot win.  With 3 x 3s and 2 x 4 shots Rigby wrapped it up in less than 1 hour and only 15 ends.  At 20-13 Jan Morton watched her lead dissipate to 20-19 over the next 5 ends before getting that all important last and 21st shot to win over Julie Ezzy.

Section 10

Linda Morish (Pine Rivers) DEF Angela Bonutto (Vermont Sth) 21-20

Di Cunnington (Tweed Heads) DEF Mary Geddes (Bribie Island) 21-10

Veteran former winner (1995) Di Cunnington dominated the second half of her match against Mary Geddes.  At 7 all on 8 ends Cunnington won 7 of the next 9 ends with a 15-3 run to win 21-10.

Section 11

Debbie Logan (Springwood) DEF Yvonne Lovelock (Musgrave Hill) 21-12

Barbara Sprengel (Ocean Shores) DEF Ann-Maree Peart (South Tweed) 21-19

South Tweed's Ann-Maree Peart carried local hopes after a recent win in the Qld State singles but lost first up to Barbara Sprengel.  Peart held a 5 shot lead on 19 ends (18-13) but 7 shots in 4 ends had Sprengel leading 20-19 on 23 ends and with a single at the next Sprengel won the match.

Section 12

Maree Gibbs (Milmerran) DEF Karen Goldsworthy (Springwood) 21-16

Sue McKenzie (Broadbeach) DEF Lorraine Wilmott (Caloundra) 21-17

Sue McKenzie earned her 4 shot win against Lorraine Wilmott.  After a 2 and 3 on the first two ends, Wilmott picked up 8 singles in the next 18 ends to lead narrowly 13-12 before a 4 at the 21st end gave her a 17-12 break.  Wilmott won four of the next five ends to trail 17-18 on 26 ends before McKenzie collected three consecutive singles to win at the 29th end 21-17.

Section 13

Valerie Jackson (McKenzie Park) DEF Julie Keegan (St John's Park) 21-10

Carole McDonald (Manly) DEF Sally Hickman (South Tweed) 21-9

Former Australian rep Julie Keegan was a surprise 11 shot loser against Val Jackson.  Jackson only won 10 of the 18 ends but with multiple scores of 1 x 4 and 3 x 3 the match was over on 18 ends giving Keegan a real challenge to make the post sectionals.

More disappointment for South Tweed supporters as Sally Hickman lost to Carole McDonald.  McDonald led 9-7 on 8 ends before a 12-2 run over 11 ends gave her a convincing win.

Section 14

Margaret Fairbairn (Caloundra) DEF Faye Clarke (Pine Rivers) 21-18

Marilyn Peddell (Coolum Beach) DEF Sandy Wallace (Adelaide) 21-18

After a tight first 9 ends 2000 winner Margaret Fairbairn took the lead on 13 ends 11-10 and maintained this to the end with a 21-18 win.  It wasn't easy though as each time Fairbairn took a lead Clarke would close in as she did with a 4 to make it 17 all on 21 ends before a run of singles took Fairbairn to victory after 26 ends.

Section 15

Tracy Foster (West Toowoomba) DEF Margaret O'Rourke (Moore Park) 21-19

Jenny Blundell (Everton Park) DEF Lolita Treasure (South Tweed) 21-2

In one of the quickest matches in recent history, Jenny Blundell crushed the hearts of South Tweed Supporter with her demolition of Lolita Treasure 21-2.  Treasure who won her section last year had no answer as a ruthless Blundell won in only 11 ends in just 40 minutes.

Section 16

Julie Dean (Paradise Point) DEF Gail Crompton (Bargara) 21-16

Karen Murphy (Cabramatta) DEF Joan Tennent (Lara) 21-11

It was 4 all in the Murphy-Tennent after 7 ends and from the 8th end Murphy took the lead and kept Tennent 3 shots or more away to the end.  On the 20th end Tennent's 3 gave her some hope coming back to 11-17 but Murphy responded with a 4 at the next to claim the match.

Anderson misses Post Sectionals

It seems that Carmen Anderson has been a permanent fixture in the Post Sectionals and so it was a shock to see her bundled out by Clare Hall.  Six of the eight section winners were 3 game winners with Elaine Carroll (S2) and Sharyn Renshaw (S5) two game winners.

SECTION WINNERS

S1 Kelsey Cottrell St John's Park 6 + 22

S2 Elaine Carroll Wynnum 4 + 9

S3 Brenda Thompson Helensvale 6 + 17

S4 Clare Hall Manly 6 + 26

S5 Sharyn Renshaw St John's Park 4 + 16

S6 Eryn Brightwell Darra Cementco 6 + 20

S7 Lyn Cuthbertson Tweed Heads 6 + 27

S8 Anne Johns St John's Park 6+ 20

Section 1

Kelsey Cottrell (St John's Park) DEF Ruth Greentree (Kandanga) 21-13

Amanda Haevecker (Helensvale) DEF Ann-Maree Hardey (Tweed Heads) 21-11

Kelsey Cottrell made it an automatic section win with her third win from as many games.  Though never headed, Cottrell had to work for her win and from 10-9 on 13 ends collected 8 shots in 4 ends and finally won 21-13.

Section 2

Thelma Sanday (Coolum Beach) DEF Gail Waitai (Broadbeach) 21-13

Elaine Carroll (Wynnum) DEF Jan Curran (Pelican Waters) 21-6

Section 2 finished with three ladies on two wins and only 4 shots separating them.  Jan Curran will be wondering what happened after carrying a 22 shot margin into game 3 but a 15 shot loss to Elaine Carroll left Carroll at 4 + 9 and Curran 4 + 5.   Carroll dominated winning 11 of the 15 ends played while Thelma Sanday nearly took the section herself with an 8 shot win over Gail Waitai.  Sanday finished a narrow 3 shots shy at 4 + 6.

Section 3

Brenda Thompson (Helensvale) DEF Leigh Fortington (Coolum Beach) 21-10

Carol Rembacher (Indooroopilly) DEF Sylvia Hopkins (Kandanga) 21-17

Brenda Thompson controlled her final match against Leigh Fortington to win by 11 shots and take section 3.  Thompson the 2008 winner and 2010 runner up seemed to get better as the day progressed and will give Kelsey Cottrell a great run in Section 1 of the post sectionals.

Section 4

Clare Hall (Manly) DEF Carmen Anderson (Cabramatta) 21-18

Christina Pavlov (Broadbeach) DEF Teresa Armitage (Helensvale) 21-7

Clare Hall provided the upset of the day sending dual champion Carmen Anderson out in the sectionals.  Hall won the first five ends to lead 10-0 but in typical Anderson fashion the lead was clawed back and Hall led 10-8 on 10 ends and Anderson then led 16-15 on 18 ends and 18-16 on 20 ends.  To her credit, Hall won the next 3 ends with 3, 1 and a telling 4 to win 21-18.

Section 5

Mary Geary (Caloundra) DEF Denise Knight (Tugun) 21-13

Ann Russell (Musgrave Hill) DEF Sharyn Renshaw (St John's Park) 21-18

Despite a last game loss, Sharyn Renshaw won section 5 by keeping the loss margin to only 3 shots and finishing at 4 + 16.  Her victor Ann Russell ended at 4 + 7.

Section 6

Bev Parker (Bargara) DEF Sharon Whana (Glenroy) 21-20

Eryn Brightwell (Darra Cementco) DEF Liz Fleming (Cudgen Leagues) 21-8

Eryn Brightwell removed any chance for the other ladies in section 6 when she automatically progressed to the post sectionals with her third game win.  Taking the lead early, Brightwell kept her opponent to primarily single shots while Brightwell claimed numerous 2s along the way to win 21-8.

Section 7

Lyn Cuthbertson (Tweed Heads) DEF Joy Lake (Cabarita) 21-11

Estelle Welsh (Algester Sports) DEF Maryann Parcell (St John's Park) 21-20

With solid form over the years at South Tweed Lyn Cuthbertson continued her winning ways and with her third win of the day collected another post sectional position.

Section 8

Clare Hill (Cabarita) DEF Adrienne Dan (Kandanga) 21-16

Anne Johns (St John's Park) DEF Christine Hoad (Beenleigh) 21-8

Anne Johns keeps her chance to go back to back alive with a third successive win in section 8.  Her opponent Christine Hoad had a great start to the day with a 13 shot win but in this match trailed by 3 shots or more after 6 ends with Johns winning going away 21-8 on 17 ends.

Day 1 Game 2

Favourites remain undefeated after game 2

With no obvious shocks to date, the favoured ladies in each section are well placed with 2 wins from 2 and control their destiny looking towards Wednesday's Post Sectionals.  With only section 4 down to two ladies, the other seven sections remain a contest amongst three, albeit the chances vary due to margins.

Section 1

Kelsey Cottrell (St John's Park) DEF Ann-Maree Hardey (Tweed Heads) 21-10

Amanda Haevecker (Helensvale) Ruth Greentree (Kandanga) DEF 21-19

A win only is needed for Kelsey Cottrell after her comfortable win over Ann-Maree Hardey.  Cottrell led 12-1 on 9 ends and Hardey could get no closer than 8 shots from there as Cottrell went away to win 21-10. Ruth Greentree needs to beat Kelsey by 7 shots to upstage her in game 3 for the section while Amanda Haevecker needs the Greentree win and a large win of her own over the winless Hardey to pinch the section win.

Section 2

Thelma Sanday (Coolum Beach) DEF Elaine Carroll (Wynnum) 21-13

Jan Curran (Pelican Waters) DEF Gail Waitai (Broadbeach) 21-10

At 4 + 20 Jan Curran could sustain a loss but still win the section as her opponents all have minus margins.  Her opponent Elaine Carroll (2 - 6) needs a 14 shot win to jump Curran.  With a Curran win, Thelma Sanday with a 4 shot better margin (2 -2) than Carroll will be in with a chance to win section 2.

Section 3

Brenda Thompson (Helensvale) DEF Sylvia Hopkins (Kandanga) 21-16

Carol Rembacher (Indooroopilly) DEF Leigh Fortington (Coolum Beach) 21-17

Brenda Thompson's small margin 4 + 6 will require her to win to take section 3.  Hoping the winless Leigh Fortington 0 - 9 can upset Thompson will be final game opponents Carol Rembacher 2 + 3 and Sylvia Hopkins 2 + 0.

Section 4

Clare Hall (Manly) DEF Christina Pavlov (Broadbeach) 21-15

Carmen Anderson (Cabramatta) DEF Teresa Armitage (Helensvale) 21-19

A simple equation for Clare Hall and Carmen Anderson; the winner takes section 4 as both ladies remain undefeated after game 2.

Section 5

Sharyn Renshaw (St John's Park) DEF Denise Knight (Tugun) 21-9

Mary Geary (Caloundra) DEF Ann Russell (Musgrave Hill) 21-19

Sharyn Renshaw 4 + 19 has a 15 shot buffer over her nearest rival and final game opponent Ann Russell 2 + 4 and so could take a small loss and win the section.  Mary Geary will need a good win over Denise Knight and a Renshaw loss to keep her hopes alive for a Wednesday post sectional spot.  Geary and Russell played a classic match in game 2 lasting 32 ends.  It was indeed a battle of attrition and to demonstrate the tightness of it all the match included 23 ends of single shots, 7 ends of 2 shots and a lone 3!  Geary won the marathon 22-19 with marker Kim Meade enjoying what she described as the 'best match I've marked in years' at the Black Douglas.

Section 6

Eryn Brightwell (Darra Cementco) DEF Bev Parker (Bargara) 21-19

Sharon Whana (Glenroy) DEF Liz Fleming (Cudgen Leagues) 21-15

Only 7 shots separate the top 3 in section 6 though Eryn Brightwell is the only 2 game winner.  Brightwell 4 + 7 can claim the section with a win but a loss opens the door for the other game between Sharon Whana 2 + 1 and Bev Parker 2 + 0.

Section 7

Lyn Cuthbertson (Tweed Heads) DEF Maryann Parcell (St John's Park) 21-10

Estelle Welsh (Algester Sports) DEF Joy Lake (Cabarita) 21-9

The consistent Lyn Cuthbertson at 4 + 17 looks likely for section 7 with a last game against Joy Lake (0 - 14).  Still, Estelle Welsh 2 + 6 will be looking for a win over Maryann Parcell 2 - 9 and hoping for a Cuthbertson loss.

Section 8

Clare Hill (Cabarita) DEFChristine Hoad (Beenleigh) 21-3

Anne Johns (St John's Park) DEF Adrienne Dan (Kandanga) 21-20

Defending champion Anne Johns had to fight all the way to remain undefeated with a 21-20 win over Adrienne Dan.  Despite being undefeated, at 4 + 7 Johns knows she simply must win to claim section 8 with Clare Hill at 2 + 12 and John's opponent at 2 - 5.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 1 Game 1

Defending Champion begins campaign on a winning note

Despite an ordinary start weather wise, the Ladies Black Dougals Singles for Masters began with the usual high quality bowls.  First game winners included 2010 defending champion Anne Johns, birthday girl Kelsey Cottrell and former winners Carmen Anderson and Brenda Thompson.

Section 1

Celebrating her 21st birthday in the 21st year of the Black Douglas, Kelsey Cottrell won a hard fought 1st game over Helensvale's Amanda Haevecker.  It was 5 all on 7 ends, 11 all on 12 ends and Haevacker led 17-14 on 15 ends.  Kelsey stepped up a gear winning 6 of he next 7 ends to win 21-18.

Kelsey Cottrell (St John's Park) DEF Amanda Haevecker (Helensvale) 21-18

Ruth Greentree (Kandanga) DEF Ann-Maree Hardey (Tweed Heads) 21-18

Section 2

Thelma Sanday (Coolum Beach) DEF Jan Curran (Pelican Waters) 21-11

Elaine Carroll (Wynnum) DEF Gail Waitai (Broadbeach) 21-19

Section 3

2008 winner Brenda Thompson fell behind early 2-8 (6 ends) but by the 12th end was ahead 11-9 after winning 5 of the 6 ends in her match with Carol Rembacher.  Rembacher led 14-11 at 14 ends but 8 shots in 4 ends had Thompson up 19-14 and then Rembacher fought back to lead 20-19 on 21 ends.  Two shots at the next end gave Thompson the win.

Brenda Thompson (Helensvale) DEF Carol Rembacher (Indooroopilly) 21-20

Sylvia Hopkins (Kandanga) DEF Leigh Fortington (Coolum Beach) 21-16

Section 4

Clare Hall had the biggest win of game 1 with her 17 shot win over Teresa Armitage and dual winner Carmen Anderson also had a double digit win of 12 shots.

Clare Hall (Manly) DEF Teresa Armitage (Helensvale) 21-4

Carmen Anderson (Cabramatta) DEF Christina Pavlov (Broadbeach) 21-9

Section 5

Despite the mishap of her bowls being lost in transit, Sharyn Renshaw with borrowed bowls was good enough to win first up by 7 shots (her bowls turned up mid game).

Sharyn Renshaw (St John's Park) DEF Mary Geary (Caloundra) 21-14
